2017 Winter Ducks Field Trip

On April 2, 2017 nine of us participated in our belated Winter Duck Outing. The day began with cloudy skies and snow flurries but by noon the sun was out and the temperature had climbed to +5 Celsius. We started off in Hampton and during the course of the day we stopped at multiple locations including Courtenay Bay, Reversing Falls Park, Lorneville Wharf, Anthony's Cove, Cape Spencer and three water treatment lagoons. We had a great day, with lots of luck, and were able to identify 35 species of birds with a couple of us adding new ones to our life lists. I'd like to thank our guide, Richard Blacquiere, for making this a very enjoyable and successful outing.

We saw the following species:

American Black Duck, Mallard, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, American Wigeon, Wood Duck, Ring-necked Duck, Gadwall, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Common Eider, Snow Goose, Canada Goose, Hooded Merganser, Red-breasted Merganser, Ring-billed Gull, Iceland Gull, Greater Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull, American Crow, Turkey Vulture, Black-capped Chickadee, American Woodcock, Red-throated Loon, Common Loon, Red Crossbill, Blue Jay, American Robin, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Rock Dove, European Starling, Downey Woodpecker, American Raven, Purple Finch.
